Miscanthus varieties thrive in moist to average and well drained soil. Narrow leaved varieties will tolerate drought better than wider leaved varieties. They like long and hot summers and may not plume if they don't get enough heat. They offer winter interest to any garden by leaving the foliage standing, but should be cut down in spring for the new growth.

Variegatus is a variety that has green and white stripes that g vertically on a vase shaped grass and has red plumes.
